Archdiocese to hold Mass for dead clergy

The annual memorial Mass for deceased bishops, priests and deacons will held on Thursday, May 22 at noon. Archbishop John Vlazny will celebrate the Mass at St. Patrick Church, 1623 NW 19th Ave., in Portland. The date of the Mass is scheduled on the anniversary of the death of Archbishop Cornelius Power.

The Mass will particularly remember those priests who have died since the Mass was held last year. The priests who have served in the Archdiocese of Portland and who have died this year are: Father Lawrence Saalfeld, Father Jeremiah Linehan, Father Emil Kies, Servite Father Louis Breton, Father Gregory Gage, Father James Crunican, Paulist Father Vincent Sampietro, Holy Cross Father Arthur Schoenfeldt, and Father James Nibler.

The Mass will also remember the past archbishops and the auxiliary bishop who served in this archdiocese: Archbishop Francis Blanchet (died 1883), Archbishop Charles Seghers (died 1886), Archbishop William Gross, (died 1898), Archbishop Alexander Christi (died 1925), Archbishop Edward Howard (died 1983), Archbishop Robert Dwyer (died 1976), Archbishop Cornelius Power (died 1997) and Auxiliary Bishop Paul Waldschmidt, (died 1994).

All are invited to join Archbishop Vlazny for this Mass of Remembrance.
