Concerning social teaching

To the Sentinel:

The “open letter to Providence Health & Services” in the June 29 issue underscores the fact that workers’ right to organize is a bedrock principle of Catholic Social Teaching. Every worker, therefore, must be given a guarantee to organize, especially in a world that has become so dominated by corporate interests - even in the health care industry. Times have changed from the days when sisters ran Catholic hospitals like Providence. Now that these hospitals have become increasingly corporate, workers need an effective way to speak up for their patients and themselves.

Add my voice to theirs in encouraging Providence to negotiate ground rules for free and fair union elections for their workers.
