This is in reference to your coverage in the Sentinel, “Human trafficking continues to claim victims in Oregon.” I am happy that a shelter is planned because it is so difficult for ICE and other agencies to find shelter for identified victims; we need many more around the country. However, this in Portland would not be the first such shelter.

When Pope Benedict proclaimed the year for priests, the Vatican began an investigation of American Catholic Sisters. The investigation lacks collegiality, subsidiarity and transparency, core values of the Vatican II Council. The investigation is an insult to the Sisters and to American Catholic lay people.

In his report on the spiritual wounds of warfare, Ed Langlois quotes Father Michael Drury, a former military chaplain from Montana, who reminded a group of war veterans on a weekend retreat dealing with war and healing that there is such a thing as a just war in Catholic teaching. It’s a fight “when there is an unjust aggressor who cannot be stopped by any other means.”

An editorial in the Sentinel advocates ignoring the rules of law and common decency.
In the Jan. 7 piece, the editors applaud “The proposed law (that) would end a program that gave local law enforcement agencies the authority to enforce federal immigration laws.”

I read a touching story about the financial problems faced by Oregon National Guard families. What a sad commentary that Oregon’s young men and women were sent to Iraq and placed in harm’s way on a daily basis while their families at home are faced with financial crisis.

In every state office I ventured into over the last few months, the fees doubled, tripled and some went even higher.
State fees are taxes collected from taxpayers to provide a service. To be sure, there is inflation, rising costs in doing business, even state business. But when is the state going to come to grips with a “budget?”

I was disappointed by the recent editorial “Why Oregon is in trouble.” The references made by the writer toward the timber industry need to be addressed.
