Portland real estate developer Joe Weston will receive the Elizabeth Ann Seton Award from the National Catholic Educational Association at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., Oct. 2.

The national prize is named after St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, who in 1809 founded the Sisters of Charity in Maryland and had a lifelong dedication to teaching.

This award is presented each year to someone whose support and service impacts Catholic education and the well-being of the nation’s youth. Seton honorees have a scholarship presented in their honor to a Catholic school student in their local community.

Weston will be recognized with fellow 2017 recipients Archbishop Robert Carlson of the Archdiocese of St. Louis; Rita and Lamar Hunt Jr. of Kansas City, founders of the Loretto Companies; and the late Dennis Smith of Manteno, Illinois.

Weston, a product of All Saints School and Central Catholic High School in Portland, gives millions of dollars each year in tuition assistance, endowments and matching grants through the Weston Foundation.
